The Person and the Journey
I have always been a very physically active and athletic person . From an early age I competitively swam and played a variety of sports. Throughout high school I continued to play on school teams ( volleyball, baseball) and danced. Being physically active and fit was always a focus of mine.
I then moved to Montreal to attend McGill University and fell in love with Ashtanga Yoga. It was one avenue where I could distance myself from academic stress and be abel to concentrate and focus, and as I always said "some time for myself ." It was around this age that I also began noticing physical affects in my body. My digestive system was no longer aligned with my mental body.
Hence, the journey to discover the disconnect began. Medical doctors said " try this..or don't eat this..how about a food journal to track what you eat...." The list went on and on. Left with no answers and extreme intestinal pains I began to research and read on my own. Through this journey, I began to connect food to the soul and learned that what we eat, breathe and digest absolutely affects our spirit, our mind and our soul.
I have eventually eliminated many foods from my diet and consume limited processed food. This works for me, and by no means am I suggesting this is the answer for you or your lifestyle.
Through this journey, I learned that having those quiet reflective moments are key and I have those through yoga, runs and quiet reflecting time. I have also learned that my body needs exercise to be happy, and I have learned that eating meals and food with loved ones, friends and my students is one way to connect holistically to what we consume and creates the most meaningful natural discussions.
I am currently teaching grade 4/5 in the Toronto District School Board and use these beliefs with my students in the classroom.
