Nutrition Around the World
Feeding your stomach is not the sole purpose of eating. Holistic Nutritionists believe and practice the belief that what one consumes feeds our mind, body and soul. Living a heathy and balanced life has always been a goal for me and is seen in my teaching practices in Physical Education and Health curriculums.
I like to focus on students gaining an understanding of what they eat (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) and how these can all fuel the body for what they need in their own personal lives. I use our community garden to demonstrate farming on a small scale of vegetables, fruits and herbs. My hope is for them to gain an appreciation of what they eat and to provide alternatives instead of packaged and processed foods.

New York Times Explores Kids BreakfastThe New York Times has researched and developed what children around the world eat for breakfast. It began as a response to a lack of creativity in breakfast meals. What they discovered and what you will quickly notice is that breakfast is revered around the world quite differently. Some countries eat local items grown on their land or water and other countries serve more holistic meals.
I have used this article and images to examine with my grade 4/5 class. Students were first asked to develop their own breakfast menus based on the Canada's Food Guide. We then critically look at our own meals and discuss differences amongst countries, students and nutritional contents. Watch a Video of American Kids trying some of these breakfasts: |
